What is a Functional Behavior Assessment?

A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a structured, data-driven process a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) uses to understand why a behavior is happening. Rather than just reacting to behavior, the FBA identifies its function — what the child is communicating or trying to get or avoid — so therapy targets the root cause.

When is an FBA needed?

  • Behaviors that interfere with learning, safety, or daily life
  • Aggression, self-injury, tantrums, or elopement
  • Difficulty with transitions or following routines
  • When a school or provider recommends one before a behavior plan

The FBA process

  • Interviews — we gather input from parents and caregivers
  • Direct observation — we watch behavior across real settings
  • Data analysis — we identify patterns and the behavior’s function
  • Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) — we build a clear, individualized plan

What happens after the FBA?

The FBA leads to a Behavior Intervention Plan that replaces challenging behavior with functional skills, using positive reinforcement. The plan guides your child’s ABA therapy and includes parent training so strategies are consistent at home.

Insurance & getting started

An FBA is typically a covered, medically necessary part of ABA services for children with an autism diagnosis. We verify your benefits at no cost.
