What is parent training in ABA?

Parent training (also called parent-mediated intervention) is a core part of high-quality ABA. A Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) teaches you practical, individualized techniques to encourage communication, build skills, and respond to challenging behavior with confidence. You learn by doing, with real-time coaching and feedback.

Why parent training matters

Children spend far more time with their families than in therapy. When parents use consistent ABA strategies, skills generalize faster and last longer. Parent training also reduces stress at home, improves daily routines, and empowers the whole family.

What you will learn

  • Using positive reinforcement effectively
  • Encouraging communication and following directions
  • Preventing and responding to challenging behavior
  • Building daily-living routines such as mealtimes, bedtime, and toileting
  • Teaching new skills and helping them generalize across settings

How parent training works

After a free consultation and insurance verification, your BCBA assesses your family’s priorities and builds a coaching plan. Sessions can be in-home or via telehealth, and your BCBA models strategies, coaches you in real time, and tracks progress with data.
